CHOCOLATE SAUCE
This dark chocolate sauce is just like the chocolate syrup I remember as a kid without any crazy artificial ingredients. Chocolate milk, chocolate on ice cream, chocolate with cake – this sauce can handle any chocolate situation. The best part is that it only takes 15 minutes from start to finish.
Chocolate sauce is a different animal than hot fudge. It has a thinner consistency, it’s a little sweeter and doesn’t need to be warmed up (although it is pretty spectacular right off the stove) This version is all about dark chocolate, but for those who want that classic super sweet syrupy flavor, just add more sugar to taste.

PrintCHOCOLATE SAUCE
This chocolatey sauce is a lot like supermarket chocolate syrup but without the artificial ingredients and a lot less sugar. No special techniques required, it’s a straightforward foolproof recipe that comes together in 15 minutes.
Ingredients
- 160g brown sugar
- 127g water
- 44g cocoa powder*
- 22g bittersweet chocolate
- 1/4 tsp instant espresso powder
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
Instructions
Combine everything except the vanilla and salt in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Cook over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved and just barely simmering.
Take it off the heat and stir in the vanilla and salt.
Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Cocoa powder is the backbone of the flavor in this sauce so using a high-quality powder is going to make a big difference. Look for a powder that has a minimum of 20% cocoa butter.
